The End: Plants Place in a Modern World II

Revisiting a project defined by progression produces a comparative perspective on the contemporary issue of plant's complex relationship with modernity. Returning to the locations of the plants I previously photographed placed both series of images into the context of time and acted as a before and after comparison. To contrast the previous project, which was shot late at night, I have shot PPMWII in the morning to symbolize the rebirth of the plants, free from their previous constraints. I think producing these images guides the viewer to the natural conclusion of the series, but what I think is more interesting is that, although the story of these particular plants has come to a close, the issue remains prevalent. Even the “end” of these plants is ambiguous. At the sight where Excavator with Glowing Plant and Excavator Reaching with Plant have been given space and time to recover from being surrounded by destruction and construction, there is a billboard advertising the “Future Development” of the area. These plant’s conflict with modern development is far from over.
